Walking to the Kitchen This Week!

Hey!  I want to give a big shout out to two of my blogging buddies who are going to be hard at work in the kitchen this week giving us all great ideas for canning those fruits and veggies we have been nurturing all summer or could not resist at the local farmers market!   Their link is in the top right had column of my blog, so give it a click and let them show you how to enjoy fruits and veggies well in to the winter months.  Here are links to their blog pages:

and

Do you can or freeze?  I have very vivid memories of canning as a girl.  I think I had the brownest backside in my neck of the woods because we would be out from picking strawberries in the spring and work our way right through summer into fall with cherries, bean, corn, tomatoes, with onions, peppers, peaches, broccoli and all sorts of fruits and veggies in between.  You name it, we probably grew it a least once in our garden.  And we canned or froze it all for yummy eating in the winter and spring!

My mom and I can do something that many people cannot do: we can fit our hands inside the small mouth jars to pack in the green beans!    Ever tried to do that?  I wish the rest of my body was as small as my hands, but that's a whole other blog post !  Dang!

I do have to say, though, after I moved out and lived on my own, I got away from canning.  I would go home to help, but it's hard to have a garden in an apartment complex.  Since coming to the farm, I have tried to keep a garden, but honestly it's a lot of work, and I had my little hands full with two girls and the farmer.  I think next spring will be the year of the garden for me.  I'm going to try to rein it in and not be too ambitious with what I plant, but I would like to get back to putting up food for us to eat.

Ok, It's game on starting Monday, so give these girls a shout and click in to learn all sorts of fun ways to revisit this very old way of preserving our food.  There are even a few give-aways for those of you who like that added perk!

Have a wonderful Monday, and let me know if you are joining in on the fun!

  2. we can in our home also, but mostly jams and compotes. Great post--brings back a lot of wonderful memories of me picking blackberries with my great Aunt.

  3. Believe it or not.... I still can - and I don't have a garden!!!! I just can't resist those pretty jars on the pantry shelf. It makes me feel like I've accomplished something!!! I really don't have the time to do it but do it any how! CRAZY huh?

  4. Now looking back, I wish I had learned to can with my mom. I would stay FAR away when she was working with all the canning jars and that BIG pot and all the work..... ICK... I live in a condo now, so dreams of a big garden and canning just aren't quite as easy as they were for my mom.

  5. thanks so much for mentioning our party. We are really looking forward to this week!!! After stuffing green beans in jars, I think your smaller hands would have come in handy.

  6. Not being a farmer --or having a veggie garden of my own, I have NEVER canned anything. My mother used to make the best pickles in the world (Bread and Butter) --but that is all I can remember her 'canning' for us.... I'm just a 'city' gal--even though i grew up in a small town.

AND--I'm also not much of a cook even though my mother was the BEST... I seem to love eat ---but have never been interested in being in the kitchen very much... I 'can' cook--and do when I have to. But--I am lucky to have a husband who totally enjoys making our entrees... I just enhance them with a salad or veggies and/or fruit... (I've got the easy job for sure.)

SO---I'm not much help when it comes to this particular post, Lana.... But---I am glad to find out that you have SMALL hands... Family trait, huh?????? Neat... Now--we'll have to wait a few years to see if either of your girls have the same trait...

    Have fun in the kitchen.
    Hugs,
    Betsy

  8. i just had to tell you that i love on your profile that you call your girls "Tink" and "Bear"...those are the nicknames of my boys...my younger one was nicknamed "tink" as a baby cause it was shortened from "stinker". My firstborn has always been little bear, but as he's gotten older, we just call him bear. :)

  12. Sounds fun! I wish our garden had done better this year and I was gearing up for some blanching and canning but the heat and the bugs took their toll. Maybe next year!

  13. If I did that, I would never get my hand out. I mean it. My hands don't compact well. ;o

My mom froze a lot of fruit, but she never did anything in jars!

  16. Here at Pecan Bluff we put a twist on all that canning and preserving ~ we do some stocking up, but mostly we eat what we grow, right when we grow it. That means we are having yummy melons, pears, and figs for every meal this month! The kids are being good sports about our little experiment. Hope you can get your garden going!

  17. I freeze some things, but don't know much about canning. We are going to do some straw bale gardening, along with regular dirt gardening, next year.

  18. No canning and no freezing and baking is a disaster! So in short I do very little except for fresh cooking!
